Burke Rehabilitation Hospital will host the 40th annual Wheelchair Games and Spinal Cord Injury Sports and Vendor Expo on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2019. The events will be held on Burke’s beautiful White Plains campus (785 Mamaroneck Ave.).

The Wheelchair Games provide an opportunity for athletes of all abilities to showcase their skills and participate in friendly competition. This year’s Games will include a variety of track, field, table tennis and basketball events, as well as an obstacle course. Participants will be organized into divisions based on age and ability.

The Wheelchair Games have become a community favorite during the four decades since the tradition started at Burke. The inclusive nature of the Games promises an afternoon of confidence building for athletes and inspiration for all those who come to support them.

“I’m so honored to be a part of the 40th installment of the Wheelchair Games,” said Eileen Andreassi, MA, CTRS, Director of Burke’s Recreational Therapy & Adaptive Sports. “This event provides an inclusive and supportive environment where athletes can discover the very best parts of themselves. It’s a great privilege to provide them with the chance to participate in sporting events they otherwise might not have access to.”

Field and table tennis events will begin at 9 a.m., followed by the basketball free throw competition at 11 a.m. and track events beginning at 1:30 p.m. Awards for morning events will be presented during lunch and track awards will be presented at the end of the day.

In addition to the athletic events, Burke will mark Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Awareness Month by hosting the SCI Sports and Vendor Expo. The Expo will include vendor presentations on topics such as adaptive equipment, new technologies, services and products relevant to life after SCI. The event will showcase adaptive sports and interactive product demonstrations. For more information on the SCI Expo, email Kaitlynn Hammerton at khammerton@burke.org.
