Lady Governors still cloberin’

After a perfect 16-0 regular season record and two Public School Athletic League [PSAL] playoff games, the DeWitt Clinton Lady Governors are still beating up on their opponents.

In fact, Clinton did not even relinquish a single run in the two contests, while racking up a whopping 25 runs of its own.

Clinton’s first victim was the Grand Street Campus in a game the Lady Governors won 11-0 at home on May 14.

Clinton only put one run on the board in the top of the first inning, but added seven in the second, putting the game virtually out of reach.

Alondra Soroa and Kimberly Martinez had two RBIs each, while several Lady Governors added one ribbie.

As she has all season, Maguette Fofana pitched a strong game from the mound, allowing no runs or hits while striking out 11.

The Lady Govs’ scoring machine was even more lethal two days later when the black and red beat Brooklyn’s New Utrech, 14-0.

Clinton scored all of its runs in the first four innings, before the PSAL mercy rule ended the game.

Third ranked Clinton is scheduled to play sixth ranked William C. Bryant in the third round of the Division A playoffs on Wednesday, May 22.

Lady Senators lose close one

After racking up a big win in the first round of the PSAL playoffs, the High School of American Studies Lady Senators were eliminated in a close game in the second round.

The Lady Sens opened the playoffs with an impressive 9-1 win over the High School of Environmental Studies on May 14.

American Studies scored four runs in the second inning, two in the fourth and three in the fifth.

Daphne Burdeaux and Ruby Harrison-Clay both had two RBIs. Sarah Paisner pitched all seven innings, allowing 5 hits while striking out 6.

Two days later, the Lady Senators played a much tighter game, losing 3-2 to William C. Bryant.

The Lady Senators struck first, with a run in the bottom of the first inning. The teams remained scoreless until the top of the sixth when the Lady Owls scored twice. The teams exchanged runs in the seventh but the Lady Sens were unable to manufacture the tying score.

IN-Tech out in round one

The IN-Tech Academy Panthers lost a close one in their first and only playoff game.

The Panthers were defeated by George Washington High School, 7-6 on May 14.

The Trojans got on the board first, with 2 runs in the top of the first inning. But two innings later the game was tied.

In the fourth, the Trojans again took the lead with 3 runs, but the Panthers tied the game with a three-run inning of their own.

The game was decided in the sixth, when GW put two runs on the board and the Panthers one.

The seventh inning was scoreless.

IN-Tech had an 8-8 record during the regular season.

Lady Knights win one, lose one

After an impressive win in their first playoff game, the Kennedy Campus Lady Knights lost their second round game and were eliminated from the playoffs.

Kennedy opened up the second season with a 17-3 win over Bronx rival James Monroe at Randall’s Island on May 15.

The Lady Knights scored 7 runs in the first three innings and added 4 more in the fourth inning and 6 in the sixth.

Janna Vicente was the RBI leader with 4, while Charina Medina and Naomi Jimenez had 3. Amanda Lugo and Christina Ocasio Gonzalez chipped in 2 each.

Two days later, the Lady Knights’ season ended after a 10-4 loss to Robert F. Kennedy from Queens.

RFK took a 6-2 lead after two innings and added 3 more runs in the fourth.

Amanda Lugo, Charina Medina, Naomi Rodriguez and Gonzalez had RBIs for Kennedy.

Charina Medina pitched both games for JFK.

Kennedy finished the regular season with an 11-3 record.

Sens, Science begin playoffs

The Bronx High School of Science Wolverines and the High School of American Studies Senators are the two local teams that will compete in this season’s PSAL playoffs.

The Senators, who finished the regular season at 12-4, will open at home against Robert F. Wagner of Queens, on Thursday, May 23 at 3:30 p.m.

The Wolverines, who finished at 13-3, will open against Manhattan’s Hunter College High School, also on Thursday, May 23, at 3:30 p.m.

The PSAL did not post the site of the game as of press time.

Both teams play in the Bronx B North Division.

A tale of two shutouts

The Bronx Science Wolverines tasted both the sweet and the bitter sides of the playoff fruit this past week.

The Wolverines shutout Hunter College High School, 10-0 on May 14 at Harris Field.

Science scored three runs in the top of the first, and single runs in the second, third and fourth innings, before closing out the game with four runs in the top of the fifth.

The game was called because of the PSAL mercy rule.

Veronica Weyhrauch, Maheen Khan, Louisa Oreskes and Kaitlin Finnerty had two RBIs each.

Jennifer Kellner pitched the entire game, allowing only two hits.

Two days later, however, the Wolverines traveled to Staten Island and were shutout 15-0 by Susan Wagner. The loss eliminated Science from the playoffs.

Science compiled a 11-5 record in the regular season, earning them the 12th seed in the PSAL playoffs.
