Camelia Tepelus gets pair of honors

Former Community Board 8 member Camelia Tepelus has been honored by two reputable New York City publications as an innovator and sustainability leader.

City & State included Tepelus, executive director of Morris Park Business Improvement District, in its 2023 “Above and Beyond: Innovators” list. This award is presented to 50 New York residents who “conduct transformative government projects, individual change agents and industry partners that are reimagining the public sector.”

The Romanian-born Spuyten Duyvil resident was cited for having launched “the largest landscaping program in the Bronx, beautifying commercial corridors with $60,000 in plantings and one of the city’s largest LED light programs. The publication said her most significant change was expanding transportation options, which includes Morris Park Avenue being selected for an electric scooter pilot program.

Tepelus, who was the chair of CB8’s environment and sanitation committee, was also named to Crain’s New York Business’ “Notable Leaders in Sustainability.” She was part of a list of “pacesetters propelling NY — and the world — toward a greener future.”

Van Cortlandt Jewish Center blood drive set for July 30

The Van Cortlandt Jewish Center is holding a blood drive Sunday, July 30 at the center. The initiative is part of the center’s ongoing commitment to saving lives and supporting the New York Blood Center.

“We believe that giving blood is a mitzvah, a good deed, that has the power to save lives,” said Stuart Harris, VCJC president. “Through this blood drive, we hope to bring the community together and make a tangible difference in the lives of those in need.”

The blood drive will take place from 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. at the center, which is at 3880 Sedgwick Ave.

Anyone interested in participating should schedule an appointment to help manage the flow of donors and minimize wait times. Appointments can be made by calling (800) 933-2566 and requesting VCJC on July 30.
