Methodist Home joins growing list of nursing homes hit with COVID-19

Posted

Add another neighborhood nursing home to the growing list of Bronx facilities getting hit by the coronavirus.

Methodist Home for Nursing & Rehabilitation on Manhattan College Parkway has become the 11th nursing home in the borough to report at least five deaths related to complications from COVID-19 to the state. Its six deaths match the number of people who died at Schervier Rehabilitation and Nursing Center earlier this week.

The state has kept a close eye on nursing homes through the pandemic because of how fast the virus can spread through such facilities, and the fact that older people tend to be far more vulnerable to the disease than younger.

The news comes as New York continues to see its daily death toll reduce — as of Wednesday, just a little over 300. However, more than 18,300 people have died in the state, with nearly 2,500 of those deaths happening in the Bronx. Nearly 65 percent of those deaths have come from people at least 70 years old, with more than 85 percent among people who were at least 60 years old, according to state data.

The borough now has 186 deaths reported in the 11 nursing homes, although there are likely more since nursing homes are only listed once they have at least five. Kings Harbor Multicare Center in Pelham Gardens leads the Bronx with 46 deaths, followed by The Plaza Rehabilitation and Nursing Center on Kingsbridge Road reporting 36.

Another nearby facility, St. Patrick's Home on Van Cortlandt Park South had reported 17.

Cobble Hill Health Center in Brooklyn continues to lead the state in nursing home deaths related to COVID-19 with 55, followed by Parker Jewish Institute for Health Care and Rehabilitation near Glen Oaks, Queens, with 53.
