Mount Saint Vincent is now a university

One day into the New Year and the College of Mount Saint Vincent has been transformed into a new place — at least in name.

Known under its most recent name since 1911, the school on Riverdale Avenue is now the University of Mount Saint Vincent. It was granted a charter change by the New York State Board of Regents on Jan. 1, 2024, according to a school statement released on Tuesday.

This is not the first time the Mount has announced a change in its name. Originally known as the Academy of Mount Saint Vincent — the first established higher education organization for young women in New York — the institution’s charter was amended in 1911 to create the College of Mount Saint Vincent.

The College saw major developments and growth in the century that followed, including the incorporation of a plethora of new programs and resources, the shift to a co-educational place of learning in the 1970s, and even the addition of several masters degrees.

And now, a little over 175 years since its founding, the Mount is now a university.

The College of Mount Saint Vincent will remain the university’s primary undergraduate division.

New enrollment VP

After a nearly semester-long search, Kristina Ortiz Donohue has been named the new vice president for strategic enrollment and retention, effective Jan. 1, 2024.

Donohue comes to the Mount from LIM College in Manhattan, where she vice president for enrollment services.
