Music to Biden's ears

It was a great pleasure to hear “Stand By Me” performed on television at the recent Democratic National Convention. The authors — Jerry Lieber for the lyric and Mike Stoller for the music — were born in 1933, as was I. They collaborated from 1950 until 2011, when Lieber died.

Their music was largely after my time. They started writing for the exciting artists of the African American popular song world like Big Mama Thornton. In 1952, they wrote “Hound Dog” for her years before Elvis Presley picked it up on his visits to R&B performances.

They were the major music writers for Presley’s movie, “Jailhouse Rock.”

They also brought out the art song abilities of white pop star Peggy Lee, for whom they wrote “Is That All There Is” in 1969.

It should not be a surprise that Lieber and Stoller were not fans of Donald Trump. If it were possible, Lieber would now be spinning in his grave at Trump’s neo-fascism.

Pay them a tribute by voting for the Biden/Harris ticket.
