Our co-op is very strong, united

As you noted in previous editions, the Amalgamated co-op is facing an impending gas shut down of more than 800 apartments in the oldest limited dividend co-operative in the country after failing a mandated New York City Local Law 152 inspection of the gas lines.

This crisis has been caused by the state’s homes and community renewal department through its neglect and incompetence, and has brought the Amalgamated to the verge of bankruptcy.

HCR’s mission statement is to build, preserve and protect affordable housing throughout New York state.

The Amalgamated is more than 1,500 affordable apartments. It is a diverse community with a nursery school that opened in 1933, and eight credit unions that opened in 1936.

We are also a naturally occurring retirement community and have many events for our senior citizens.

It has a gymnasium, teen center, woodworking shop, artist, studios, and the like, and we will not let this mismanaged bureaucracy destroy our community.

The fight has just begun with the formation of Amalgamated Cooperators United. The people united will never be defeated.
