Mass was celebrated a few weeks back at St. Margaret of Cortona Church for Sister Frances Devine, who died Oct. 5 in Dobbs Ferry. She was 102.

Devine was a teacher and history department chair at Cathedral High School in Manhattan’s Midtown East between 1942 and 1960, according to Catholic New York.

Later teaching positions included a 13-year stint at Cardinal Spellman High School in Edenwald, and at Blessed Sacrament in Soundview.

Devine entered the Sisters of Charity of New York in 1939, professing final vows in 1945. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the College of Mount Saint Vincent, and a master’s from Fordham University. She studied theology at Providence College in Rhode Island.

She will be buried at the Sisters of Charity Cemetery at the College of Mount Saint Vincent.

Lehman arts center wins design award

The Lehman Center for the Performing Arts, which just completed a $15.4 million renovaton project, has won the 2020 American Architecture Award for design excellence.

The award is presented by the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies as well as the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design.

It was one of 130 international winners selected by a jury of Greek architects, according to a release.

The performing arts center has a new, glazed entrance pavilion, with 6,000 square feet of additional program spaces, including an expanded box office, administrative offices, restrooms and support spaces.

“The transparent glass pavilion addition contrasts with the solidity of the existing building’s opaque, limestone facade allowing views of the activities within the building,” according to a release. It also gives the structure a “more welcoming and open appearance.”

New ramps, lifts and an elevator provides routes to more accessible seating areas, which have been added to multiple levels within the main performance hall.

Unfortunately, there won’t be any programs at the performing arts center for a while, although operations are fully funded through next June.
